3. Director of Technical Standards

The primary scope of responsibility of this role involves the review of financial statements and inspection / monitoring of assurance workpapers to ensure compliance with professional and regulatory standards and Firm policies, procedures and practices. The Director of Technical Standards will need to interact with others across all levels of the Firm and have the ability to manage multiple projects. This position will report to Partner, Standards.

Accountabilities will include:

  • Perform pre-issuance, technical review of financial statements, these may be prepared in accordance with IFRS, ASPE or ASPNO.
  • Lead development and maintenance of Firm’s professional practice policies and become a permanent member of the Firm standards committee.
  • Apply GAAP consistently within complex situations and write technical consultation memoranda on GAAP issues.
  • Perform pre and post issuance review of attest work papers and communicate results to Partner, Standards and engagement personnel.
  • Responsible for post release QCR program (monitoring).
  • Responsible for annual firm practice inspection, liaise with the Organization during the Firm’s regular inspection(s) and CPAB.
  • Identify areas that need or could benefit from improvement and develop practice aids, tools and methodology to affect change.
  • Maintain technical skills by studying trends and developments in quality management, participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.
  • Assist with firm continuing professional development through in house seminars.
  • Serve as a technical resource to partners, managers and staff.


  • Canadian accounting designation
  • High level of technical competence
  • Knowledge of GAAP, ASPE, ASNPO, IFRS, Accounting Standards
  • Excellent computer skills, knowledge of accounting software
  • Ability to research complex accounting and auditing issues
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities
